Crazy Stuff for Chickens – Diapers, Harnesses, and Costumes!
I’ve become the “chicken guy” to a number of my friends. How do I know? Well because it seems that I’m the go-to for those who are considering raising backyard chickens…reaching out to ask me what it’s really like to have them. While others, who already have chickens, call to ask questions about specific chicken-related issues. But how I know that some of my friends think I’m the “chicken guy” who may be just a little bit crazy is because of what they’ve shared on my Facebook timeline recently.
So to provide you with a little bit of chicken-themed levity I thought I’d share some of them with you.
The Hazards of Raising Hens
To set the stage I thought I’d start things off with this video called “The Hazards of Raising Hens” from One Girls Rant. If you own chickens you’ll probably see quite a bit yourself in it…I know I did. And for those who don’t own chickens…well, you’ll probably think that those of us who do truly are just a little bit crazy.
Chicken Diapers
Given that chickens spend most of their day eating, pooping, and scratching at the ground…oh, and eating and pooping some more…I kind of get why someone would want to fit their chickens with chicken diapers. However, I’d have to think that cleaning the diaper itself and then the backsides of your chickens would be more trouble than it’s worth.
Although these chicken diapers are inventive, and quite stylish I might add…until I decide to check them out for myself, I think I’ll just have to deal with a lot of poop…and use the deep litter method in my coop. (For more on the deep litter method, check out my friend Lisa Steele’s post on Fresh Eggs Daily.)
Chicken Harness
Although we did get a harness for our girls’ bunny, Rosie Mae, we haven’t gone that far for our chickens. While it may be fun walking our feathered friends around in the yard with a chicken harness, they’d probably prefer to roam free on their own.
Besides, if we did venture beyond our fence I’d be afraid that one of the neighborhood dogs would chase us down the street looking for an afternoon snack! But then again, if harnessing your chicken is what will help them from being all cooped up, more power to you!
Halloween Costumes for Chickens
With Halloween just around the corner, I thought I’d end with this one…costumes for your chickens. You can Google it and find all sorts of homemade costumes of all themes. Check out this one that I found, and this one. But the costume that I like best…but may not be as crazy, is this one from JeniHarveyDesigns.
Figuring out what we four Scotts are going to be for Halloween is probably all that we can handle this year, but maybe we’ll consider decking them out next year. But as I type this, I can just see Britt’s eyes rolling back in her head and hear her saying “You’re on your own for that!” So it will probably never happen.
Have you ever used any of these crazy chicken products or dressed up your hens…or seen any other crazy chicken stuff? If so, please share. I’d love the chuckle…and may even try some of them out on my ladies. After all…I am the “chicken guy” who is just a little bit crazy.

Funny on so many levels…and all very creative. Thanks Brenda! – Take Care, Doug
From one crazy chicken person to another, I love this post, Doug. However, I am happy to say I have not used diapers on my chickens nor put them in a harness, tutu, or other costume. Have you seen the chicken stroller yet? That’s another thing to put on your list of crazy chicken stuff.
Hope you are enjoying a beautiful autumn in your neck of the woods.
Thanks Deb! And regardless of where on the spectrum of “crazy” we may fall…I think most of my non-chicken-lovin’ friends will still call me “crazy”. But I’m good w that! And no, I have not heard of the chicken stroller. I’ve heard/seen a dog stroller…but I’m going to go look for it and add a link in these here comments if I’m able to find it. Thanks for the crazy heads-up.
Thanks my friend…and we are enjoying this beautiful autumn in our neck of the woods…and I hope you are in yours! Take care, D.
