Great American Backyard Campout Day!
Mark your calendars…this coming Saturday, June 28th is Great American Backyard Campout Day! Who knew?! This year the National Wildlife Foundation has set a goal of getting 200,000 people across the country to camp out this weekend. To learn more, as well as get some great tips and ideas for your camping experience you can go to this link:
Coincidentally, “Have a backyard campout” is on our “2014 Summer Bucket List”! Looks like we’ll be crossing it off Sunday morning….because it’s official, we’ll be camping out in our backyard this Saturday night as we participate in Great American Backyard Campout Day!
Will you pledge to be one of the 200,000? If you want to join us, just click on this image and pledge your support.
We did a backyard campout when the girls were younger as an introduction to camping…thinking that it would be a good warm-up before heading out into the woods for a more traditional camping trip. We thought – let’s start small and camp out in the backyard…just in case anyone got scared…so that we had potties just a few steps away …and because it didn’t require a lot of planning or packing food and supplies. Well I thought all that…my Resident Camper didn’t seem to be concerned about much of anything…no surprise!
For the record…all four of us made it through night…nobody chickened out! It was such a fun night, a big hit with the girls, memories were made! It was an adventure…in our own backyard. Now, I’m sad to say we haven’t ventured out of our backyard to a more traditional campsite yet….maybe this fall would be a good chance to give that a shot…but for now, it looks like another Backyard Campout is in store for our family this weekend!
Here’s what we are committing to do this Saturday night and hope you will too…
- We will set up a tent.*
- We will cookout on the grill.
- We will set aside all our electronics.
- We will use headlamps and flashlights when the sun goes down.
- We will roast marshmallows and make s’mores on our firepit.
- We will gaze at the stars.
- We will read a book together at bedtime or tell made up stories.
- We will sleep in sleeping bags.
- We will wake up early with the birds.
- We will bring our breakfast outside and eat at our “campsite”
- We will laugh!
- We will have fun!
- We will make memories!
(*Disclaimer: There’s a good chance that The Scott Family might set up camp for our Backyard Campout in our treehouse…as that has been on our bucket list too. So this just might be the night…that is if we can all fit up there! If not…a tent it will be.)
Hope you guys will join us in having a backyard camping adventure this weekend. Memories will be made and you will have a story to tell come Sunday!
Take care,
PS: I’m praying that it doesn’t rain Saturday night…because this Momma won’t last camping out back in pouring rain if my dry house is just steps away. Just being real. 🙂

Oh! I just love this. You guys are going to have so much fun… and make some really sweet memories. Can’t wait to see you guys all bright eyed at church the next morning! 🙂
Thanks Mz. Wigley…yes, we are really looking forward to it. And yes…we’ll just see how bright-eyed and bushy-tailed we’ll be in the morning. So I ask you…are you and your Mr. Mister going to join in and have your very own backyard campout?! I look forward to hearing. Take care, D.
Wallis has been BEGGING to camp in the backyard! We actually set the tent up a couple days ago — in the basement — (because it was set to storm that evening.) Now that I know today is the official camp out date our moral imperative is clear! We’ll join you out under the stars tonight, on our own little patch of backyard green! Happy camping!
Leigh: Glad to see on fb that you and Wallis had a grand ole time camping in your back yard. We did too! We cheated a little bit…by sleeping in our treehouse…but all 4 of us made it through the night. We look forward to more nights camping out back…although I might opt for the softer ground vs. the hard plywood. Cheers friend, D.
